Unknown King and Queen
A Ballad by Krista Meadows
26 March 2023

John and Alice made their palace

In a tent near Amsterdam

In October as the sun fell into the lake

They signed their names in sand

They never left each other’s side

in November the sky turned cold

December snow attacked their kingdom

The king and queen grew old

All the riches of the world

All that nature can bring

Sit at the feet of truest love

The unknown queen and king

Between the shuttering of her teeth

Her highness softly spoke

“Dear John” the last words the king heard

They fell asleep but never woke

To this day sits near the water

The tallest tree in Holland

For never were there deeper roots

‘cept where royal seeds hath fallen

All the riches of the world

All that nature can bring

Bow at the base of truest love

The resting queen and king
